County Laois is located in the middle of Ireland and belongs to the province of Leinster. It is the only county in Ireland not bordered by a county with a coastline. Laois covers 1,719 km² and its capital is Portlaoise. The city is famous for its Art Centre, a former jail. It is also an ideal basis to explore the county. With the Rock of Dunamase, Laois possesses one of Ireland's finest fortifications. It is one of the most ancient sites in Ireland and worthwhile visiting. The rock is 150 feet high and crowned by the walls of Masg Castle. The castle's remains are considerable due to the thickness of the walls. In the northwest of the county one can find the Slieve Bloom Mountains with its highest point the Ardarin (1,734 ft). The area of county Laois is quiet and beautiful. It offers the possibility of a lot of activities, such as fishing, hunting, golfing and sightseeing.
